Fort Pierce Inlet State Park

Went to see what was going on at Fort Pierce Inlet State Park. It was a beautiful sunny day and the wind was blowing hard from the north east. The inlet had a few boats anchored up along the north side of the channel. Did not see any hook up’s at all. Just as I got down to the beach there was a small shark being landed from the surf right in the corner of the jetty. The guy trying to handle the shark almost get’s bit in the process of releasing it.  Otherwise the surf fishing seemed difficult due to the wind and messy surf while a few anglers were wadding in off the beach.

Offshore Sport Fishing

Watched several boats from the Fort Pierce sport fishing fleet returning from a day offshore including the Last Mango and the Flo Rider.  Headed to the city marina to see what they caught. Turns out the Flo Rider had a great day. I saw lots of Amberjack & Tuna plus some very happy anglers. See a video showing their catch below.

The lagoon is in great shape right now. The water is nice and clear and the bait has been increasing in numbers making it easier to throw the net and bait up for a day of fishing. With the dry season in full swing these clear water conditions should continue through the whole summer unless we get a tropical storm of hurricane. Let’s hope not !

Indian River Lagoon

 The  bite yesterday morning was really slow,  I spooked several nice fish while tossing lures early morning but there was not much feeding activity so I never got a bite. Fishing with artificial baits is alway a hit or miss deal. It’e either a lot of action or none.  Went into the backcountry in Fort Pierce Inlet State Park to and there was tons of silver mullet all over the place. Got a small Barracuda that was shadowing the mullet pods and missed another one.  But I did find the big Snook. They were stacked up tight against the mangroves in all the cuts that had moving water ambushing the bait as it passed by. They would not eat my DOA shrimp so I gave up. I’ll have to go back and free line a LIVE shrimp and hammer em.

Oh well it was a beautiful morning anyway, you don’t have to fish to enjoy being on the water in St. Lucie County Florida. While out there I parked on a spot where huge Great Blue Herons have their nests in the spoil island trees and they were all flying around under the beautiful lagoon sunrise. The Indian River Lagoon on Florida’s Treasure Coast is one of the most diverse eco systems on the planet and is one of our areas greatest natural resources.
